The project was developed with a Battersea Community Group. It was profiled by the BBC and the GLA as an inspirational community-led scheme.
Hafer Road was a truly unique project. We worked with a collective of 8 residents to demolish their building and build a new residential block, which they then moved back into and sold the balance of flats.
The building was constructed in in-situ reinforced concrete frames with a light gauge galvanised steel structural framing system for the external brick cavity wall support, which allows substantial thermal insulation.
The challenges ranged from the inevitable construction issues of building a new structure in between existing houses in a Battersea Terrace; to the negotiations with Thames Water to allow construction over a major sewer; to the managing of the needs and concerns of 8 clients.
